A Beasthood · The Streets

Fort Flex

You turn nothing into something, and you know a Beast for everything else.

Their gift: The Swap. A fair swap carries a little of each owner's story; Flex hands read where a thing has been. The cost: A swap can't be undone, and both sides must choose it.

About 500 Beasts call Fort Flex home.

The place

Nothing here is used for what it was built for: warehouses are gyms, garages are barbershops, rooftops are swap meets. Clippers buzz, welders crackle, onions fry on stoves made from something else. Fort Flex doesn't sleep; it naps.

Their gift, and what it costs

The Swap. A fair swap, made by choice, carries a little of each owner's story across: a swapped kettle keeps some of its last owner's patience. Marks change hands all day, but a Mark only remembers; a swap carries. Flex hands can read where a thing or a Mark has been. The cost: a swap can't be undone.

What they want, and what they fear

Want: to turn nothing into something. Fear: standing still.

People you might meet

  • Tank Ibarra (Bull, Square Deal). Last month swapped their room and stove for tiles, and sleeps under a tarp in the Boot. "Square. Next."
  • Brick Tolliver (Bull, Tally Wall chalker). Chalks every favour the morning it's done, and carefully around one: the biggest in the Streets, owed to Tank. It's the Wall's most famous blank.
  • Sparks Hallett (Skull, Torch & Anvil, Up the Chain). Reading the Boot a beam a day: "This beam's been to the Meadows. It liked it." Tank's view: "The roof has about forty days. Read faster."

Neighbours and old business

  • Bullhattan: a Flex runner has stood at every Spire launch door for sixty years, since the towers broke a deal with the crews who carried its steel. Flex hands read the towers' Marks, for a haggled fee.
  • The Beastro: half the Long Table's stoves are Flex work, swapped for suppers.

More about Fort Flex

Their scarTwelve years ago, the Barter Chain: a pair of boots became, forty-two trades later, a building.

Twelve years ago, the Barter Chain: a pair of boots became, forty-two trades later, a building. The Boot carries a little of every owner. Five years ago the Genie arrived, and three deals with them changed three lives, none evenly. The Flex still argues: would the three do it again?

What they argue aboutUp the Chain against Square Deal.

Up the Chain against Square Deal. Up the Chain: every trade should lead somewhere, until each thing reaches the Beast who needs it most. Square Deal: a trade should leave both sides even. Square Deal hold the chalk; Up the Chain hold the Boot, and a chain on link thirty-one: a rowing boat, in a Beasthood with no water.

This seasonThe Boot's roof has one winter left in it, and the argument is out of time.

The Boot's roof has one winter left in it, and the argument is out of time. Up the Chain want the Boot traded on before the frost as the forty-third link, leaks and all. Square Deal say nothing goes up a chain with holes in it. The Morning Swap settles it at the first frost, one chalk mark a Beast, and it's even. Tank is on the roof either way.

A customTell It First.

Tell It First. Nothing at the Morning Swap changes hands until the thing's story is told out loud; then the haggling starts. Sparks keeps a hand on it and calls out the bits that didn't happen: "This kettle has not been to the Edge. It's been to Clippers Row, twice."

PlacesThe Boot: forty-two trades tall; stand inside and you hear the chain.

  • The Empty Table: set at every Morning Swap, for whatever comes.
  • Tally Wall: chalked favours; wiping a line is a public act.
